In order to help you assess which tasks you're prepared to tackle yourself, we've taken a stab at given each campervan or motorhome conversion related task a difficulty rating. The definitions are below and these ratings are often referred to around the rest of the site including on the campervan conversion shop pages:
1: Very easy task, few tools required. The vast majority of people will be happy and successful in carrying out these tasks, with satisfying results.
2: Fairly straightforward task. Tools required usually include screwdrivers, socket set, pliers, saw, stanley knife, hammer, etc. Due to the nature of modern vehicles even straightforward tasks may encounter the need for specialist screw or bolt fittings like hexes, torx bits, etc - a set of these type of bits may well be a useful investment, will let you unscrew pretty much everything you encounter and won't cost too much. Most people should be able to take on these tasks unless they really don't want to get their hands dirty. Tasks in this category would definitely be classed as DIY tasks and do often involve spending a bit of time doing them but the task is usually uncomplicated to understand what to do and won't usually involve too many unexpected problems.
3: Reasonably involved task. A bigger range of tools is likely to be required and will probably include things like drills, jigsaws, wire-strippers, etc (depending on the job). Tasks like these often seem straightforward on the surface but almost always hit various snags which you will need to problem solve to resolve. A fair amount of head scratching is likely to be involved and you may well have to make things worse before you make things better! Most people who regularly take on DIY tasks will enjoy coping with the challenges these tasks pose, and will generally be very satisfying to carry out as well as saving good amounts of money.
4: Complicated DIY task. Just a step up from (3). You might well need to go out and buy a tool or tools specifically for this job, and it might well take all weekend or longer to carry out. Don't take one of these tasks on unless you're pretty confident with your DIY skills and happy to take the challenges as they come.
5: Full on conversion task usually tackled by professionals. These tasks are the reserve of experienced DIY'ers and shouldn't be taken on by you unless you know what you're doing and have a big range of tools at your disposal. For the time, money, and stress involved in these tasks it is often worth thinking seriously about just paying someone else to do them for you.
Hopefully this will act as a guide to what you do and don't want to tackle yourself in your campervan conversion project, but don't let us put you off - taking on things which you will find challenging can be immensely rewarding and the learning process is half of the attraction.
