Hey guys....
I'm loving this website and after spending the whole bank holiday weekend buying and converting my Ford Transit into a camper/day van i'm picking up some good tips.... Cheers!
I've added some pics (hopefully if i'v done it right) to show you how i've got on.... I'm pretty good with diy but not attempted a conversion before so i hope you wont be too critical and any help and advice would be greatly appreciated....
I split the rear of the van into 70/30, with 70% being the main living bit and the remaining 30% being secure storage for my mountain bikes.. i do a fair bit of mountain biking and racing so that was thinking behind the van in the first place... I can now go to races and spend a couple of nights away in comfort.
What will eventualy be the cushioned bench seat has storage underneath as well as the full height unit next to it and next to the fridge. I will still have to sleep in a tent outside the van but hope to turn the bench seat into some sort of fold out bed in the near future.. maybe a winter project????
Anyway. As you can see it's almost finished and hope maybe, you guys could comment or offer any advice?.. One thing i am going to have to do is install a liesure battery, which will sit securely at the bottom of the full height wardrobe and be accessed for charging through the space at the side of the fridge. At the moment there is a switchable light in but it is run directly of the main battery...
Forgot to mention.. i'v installed a cigarette lighter socket extension to the rear for now to power the coolbox/fridge but the liesure battery will take over this eventualy when fitted...
That's it for now... I'v rambled enough..
Laterz..
Day 4..Wednesday..
Lastnight i got as much done after work as i could carpeting the remaining walls and building the wardrobe/cupboard. I am keeping the metal bulk head behind the driver's and passenger's seat as the front cab is a bit dirty at the mo and would benefit from having a bit of a re-upholster..... or damn good clean. The back of it though facing the new interior i am painting with hammerite(other metal paints are available ha ha) in silver.. as well as around the step area and possibly the worktop... the wardrobe door i am considering painting silver too but may leave as beach.. not sure yet..
Hope you can see it coming together now?....
Over and out..

Water storage
Fri, 03/12/2010 - 10:27 — FTI have just noticed condensation forming on my water container, which has leaked accross the floor during the winter. This leads me to want to consider an alternative solution to keeping/using water in my van. Any ideas?

I did my T4 swb another way. MTB(s - 2 of them) goes nicely across van with wheels off using up back 2 feet or so inside rear door. Pack and hang gear and wheels around them then to get sleeping space a 3/4 length bed homemade from rock and roll hinges from justkampers. this aligns with swivelled front seat to make up foot end of bed and also creates sociable seating area for four with bed folded to seat. Couple of kitchen wall units on wingnuts on side of van behind drivers seat for full heath robinson versatility.

Sat, 08/30/2008 - 09:01 — campergirlHi mdr,
Your conversion is looking wicked. I like the idea of keeping the bikes in separate storage. I always struggle to know where to put bikes. Never like leaving them on the back or on the roof! I recognise the coolbox too, I think I have it's little brother version...
- I reckon you could go for the simple fold down option (like a cheap sofa bed - see photo). So have three bits of foam hinged with material which can fold onto the seat and backrest but fold out onto the floor to make the bed (although this depends on the height of the seat box).
- Alternatively if you need to keep everything level if you could make a second base board which could be stored under the foam on the seat and the slid in and out then you would need to make some brackets (on the floor or underside of the board) and put in legs to support?
Be good to see it finished (although I don't know if conversions are ever truely 'finished').
