My Transit conversion

Hi guys like so many before ne I have decided to start my own blog .The van I chose  to convert was a ford transit lwb with a mid roof , colour white. The mid roof was great giving extra storage above the drivers cab .

The van had 90000 miles when i bought her and was in good condition . It was previously a carpenters van so this meant there was a lot of cleaning to do on the incide .I removed all the old pannels and cleaned the the bare metal from top to bottom . I used 6 mm ply for the walls and roof and 12mm on the floor all treated . for insulation i used rockwool aolng with a plastic layer to decrease condensation and to prevent rattles .

I bought a new 120 amp deep cycle camping battery which charges off the altinator along with teh van batter using a switch relay . this was the one piece of work so far which i had to pay a professional to do . The lay out is simple compared to many other designs i have seen on various sites . the beds run from the back of the van down each wall creating 2 benches which then fold out into one massive double bed with the occupints sleeping lengthways down the van this method can comfortably sleep 3 if in sleeping bags . storage is under the large benches which make up the beds .

there are no back windows on the van making it very dark but this was by choice . I'm 19 and converting a van for sleeping surfing and crashing after partys , This dosent mean im going to skimp on anything i build but i plan on touring europe for 2 months next summer and security i find is a big issue . Windows are a luxoury i dont feel i need . time spent in the van will only be when essentialy needed and if its bright outside ill be outside :D . however for light i am going to use 3 strip lights each containing 3 bulbs ensuring a bright white light thats not hard on teh eyes .

My big descision now is ventilation . I concidered a skylight but instead i think i am going to install 2 circulating vents the kinds that spin on teh roof . i no these circulate air well while driving but while stationary i prsume they do a good job too and two i feel would be plenty however any advice on this would be much appreciated .

SO thats it so far the incide is still bare ply wood with teh frames all built I wanto carpet the walls and lino the floor soon another topic which i would love advice on . for cooking i am going to buy a camping stove on ebay similare to most campervan stoves but it wll have fold out legs so it can be moved around . for water i wanto install a simple 20-30 litre jerry can style tank with a cheap 12v pump somthing simple . this will be mounted behind the drivers seat on a unit . I bought a camping heater on ebay which runs on small gas bottles not the best inconfined spaces but puts out serious heat in a small ammount of time , just never wanto leave it on!!. On the outside i have stuck on large ripcurl and billabong vinyls which i am delighted with giving the van a whole no look i also put on black spped stripes up the bonnet and down the back thses certainly grab people attention

As far as audio and video i bought a head unit which has a 7 inch screen a dvdplayer satnav radio tv etc . I wanto install a revearse camera onto this unit . I installed a huge sound system because theer is nothing a prefer more then quality music while on a long drive this consists of 1 sub . 4 6by9s 2 amps and a set of 6by6s. the speakers on teh back doors open out to face behind teh van this was a great idea for partys :D:D . the last thing i wanto do is install a good nverter 1 or 2 thousand watts as its always handy to have mains power while on teh move , i still have to research which inverter would be best so any advice would be great .

So thats me i hope i can help anyone with any questions and if you took teh time to read all this thanks . please feel free to make any suggestions  thats why i wrote it all . ill try get some piks up too .

All the best

Alex

First conversion

2004 Transit 125 T260

I bought the van 2 years ago with 68000mls on the clock, I had a 1995 90 T280 before but she was a bit rusty to start converting, I did think about it. Sold her with 245000miles on (most reliable vehicle I've ever owned) I don't use the van for work although that was the idea, so I can keep it clean and campervans have to be the way forward!!!

I started by getting a Tourneo door from a scrap yard so I had a window and door furniture to save some work. With that fitted I removed all the ply for cleaning and insulating.

I got some laminate floor insulation that is waterproof and reasonable cheap to insulate floor and roof. and some recycled plastic for loft insulation to fill the side wall cavities and door cavities. This was secured in place with polythene and duct tape. I use the van as an every day driver, the difference in road noise was amazing with just the floor and side cavities done.

I then refitted the floor ply, carpet and corner trims. The side wall ply was trimmed to take the off side window. I watched autoglass fit the window in my door and thought it was easy so I fitted the ofside window (just a tip the trim supplied with the fitting kit Is too bulky and holds the glass off the body by 10mm! should only be about 5mm so wouldn't bother with it if I ever do that again. All ply pieces were trimmed with grey vynil, glued and stapled to the back of the ply. I have to Thank my mother for this as I would of made a right mess! and probably given up.

Next I ran some cables from the back of the drivers seat to both the back corners for lights and sockets before starting on the roof. With some 6mm ply I lined the roof being careful to make it in 2 identical halves and shaped to hug every strengthening beam. That took a long time to achieve but I am very happy with the results. I then looked at ventilation as we hired a camper in Oz but every moning the windows were dripping with condensation. I chose the spinning type roof vent as My insurance wanted to charge me more for fitting a rooflight? they did for the windows!

I cut a piece of ply that spanned from the back roof beam to the rear of the van, then I made a frame to fill the gap between that and the main roof panels. This had to be done due to the maximum roof thickness for the spinner is about 12mm. The main panels were then cut to suit the vent area and it was all trimmed with carpet

This is as far as I have got, sink unit and electrics will go in this weekend so we can use it on our first trip. As soon as I have come up with a bed system I will post the pictures. Happy converting!

Insurance

Hi Alex,

I'd just like to know how much your insurance is and whether you have registered it as a camper or not, I'm 21 so a similar age to you and trying to decide the best vehicle to convert for a few months travelling. At the moment i'm looking at transits or some type of minibus. Also what is insurance for travelling abroad like for young people?

Transit Conversion

Hey Alex,

Thanks for putting this all up.  It's really useful to hear what other folk have done with their van conversions.  Your audio and vid systems sounds wicked.  Not sure about the pros and cons of the ventilation options you have but there is some stuff elsewhere on the site about carpeting.  Lino is a great option for the floor and carpet on the walls gives a good effect.  Most folk I know who've done this have used impact adhesive for the carpet.  I like the idea of the surfing graphics, would be cool to see some pics.......
