small van conversions

small van conversions
Hi there, I've just got a peugot expert van and I plan to convert it into a camper for use when I'm away playing in the outdoors. Was just wondering if any of you had any great ideas in terms of layout and style specifically for small vans with 2 side doors? Comments and photos would be great!

small camper van conversion

Hi,

Cool smaller van, not seen a peugot expert conversion before but reckon a good template would be a Mitsubishi camper or Mazda bongo camper (both are smaller camper van conversions).  A big space saver will be if you don't need proper secure passenger seats in the back, then you can make the most of the space and layout.  Found a picture of a panel lined expert with the door access left both sides which would be a good starting point.

I'd probably go for a bed taking up most of the space with some simple storage beneath and a roof rack for toys.  If you want a fixed stove / cupboards though you probably need to lose a side door or put this in at the back.  This would push the bed space forward or to one side.  Found some good photos at bongosales.com.  Be good to hear / see photos of how you get on.  Good luck.

Very interested

Hi,  am thinking of going down the expert route too - have you got the older or new shape - probably going for older here (if i can convince my partner not to go for a Land rover!

Would be really interested in chatting and seeing how you get on with it  - are you thinking day van with occasional sleeping?

Paul

thanks for the suggestions /

thanks for the suggestions / intrest, still havent started yet, but thinking of installing a folding seat that folds out accross most of the van to make the bed and then a simple unit behind the passenger seat's (restricting access to that side door) which will house a cooker, sink and electrics. so looking for some small units to go in here, any suggestions? and does anyone have any recomendations for fuse boxes split relays and lesure batteries?

will keep you informed and add some photos as it all comes together.

p.s. paul it is the older shape expert and yes an every day van with a seat and occasional sleeping (plan to make the bed removable).

small units

I'd usually say custom make units for a van conversion as the spaces are often odd shapes and you can do something fairly good with plywood.  Having said that, friends have just finished a conversion using IKEA units.  I have no idea if that would work but it would seem to cut some of the hassle.  The one thing is, if you could find one the right size and shape it will be heavier than a home-made unit but if you're just putting in one it shouldn't matter.  Possibly worth a look?

re: units

Thanks campergirl but i meant sink and cooker units rather than furnature, plan to self build as mutch as possible to maximise the space.

Campervan stove and sink

Ah, right, sorry.  Couple of options online here:

Gas cooker and stove combi and Burner hob / sink combi.  Also any big campsite with an onsite shop should have something.

If space is a real issue you could just go for a sink and use an ordinary portable camping stove.  Gives you the option to cook outside but you'ld need to find somewhere safe to use it in the van.

its all go...

just thought i would quickly let ya all know that i finally started today, ripped out all the old pannelling that some cowboy had installed moved my passenger seat and sorted the electrics! will post up some pics soon,

Starting out

Now the fun begins .....good luck and let us know how you're getting on......

a sad end...

Well I said I would let you know how this went....

unfortunately this van came to a rather abrupt end in the snow and ice last January 2010, written off completely however I did salvage much of the conversion panels electrics etc which by a stroke of luck are about to be fitted to a friends Peugeot expert as part of her first conversion.

I on the other hand am well on the way converting a new VW T5, boring i know but decided the little bit of extra length and only one side door was worth it!

so it’s now all panelled out insulated and carpeted, most of the wiring is in place if not done and I’m about to start on the furniture bed cupboards etc, again it’s a conversion with work and play at its heart, so will be done so that I can still get a kayak in both in day and night mode, not to mention kites bikes and climbing kit. this one however will be fully fitted with cooker sink and a fridge -didn’t get that far with the last one!

Will post some pictures up soon.

conversion continues....

Hey Pete, sorry to hear about the peugeot.  Hard to see all that work end although once you start it seems you will always just be in between conversion projects :o).  Sounds like the T5 is a good step up.  Our first conversion was definitely a bit 'rustic'.  The second one is a good chance to do all the things you never quite got round to (or in our case did wrong!!) first time round.  Sounds like you also have almost as many toys to fit in as we do, be interested in your solution for bikes?....
